The importance of Solapur (Maharashtra) is unique in the history of India in the sense that this district enjoyed the freedom even before independance. The special feature of Solapur is Lord Shivyogi Shri Siddharameshwar, who is the chief deity of the city. Lord Siddheshwar was a yogi who attained divinity through his service to society. He believed in "Duty is Deity". He was a great mystic and Kannada poet and written 68000 dictims (vachanas). He has also erected 68 consecrated Shivlingas and Asthavinayak in the panchkroshi of Solapur. In 12th century, he constructed the lake with the help of devotees to solve the drinking water problem of society.
